Road Woes Continue

The Dores fall to 2-4 in conference play, 0-4 on the road. No team can win on the road in the SEC with 34% shooting and 4 trips to the charity stripe.

The DD forecasts an end to the gloomy three weeks, starting this weekend. The Dores have played the 4 best teams in the conference, all on the road. The schedule eases up considerably from here out. The DD sets the over/under at 10 Commodore conference wins.

Dores Stay in Top 20

19th in both polls.

Ugly Loss in Gainesville

The 31-6 lead looked more like a football score than a basketball score. Too tough to come back from.

The DD hopes the sluggish start was an effect of an 8 day layoff and that a different team shows up in Oxford.

Two Sport Graham Trying to Make it Happen

Good piece on the emergence of redshirt cornerback Jamie Graham.

The DD likes what it sees in Graham. His minutes have been sparse, but he brings a football attitude to the hardwood. The DD would like to see JG break a UT press and slam dunk the ball at the other end.

Weekend Watch

"No. 13 Vanderbilt at Florida, Sunday, 1 p.m. ET (ESPN Full Court, ESPN360.com)
After being humbled with a 20-point loss at the hands of the Volunteers, the Commodores rebounded by beating up on LSU, 92-76. Shan Foster will attack the fearless, young Gators in an attempt to get Vandy to 3-2 in SEC play. Nick Calathes and Jai Lucas will try to keep close tabs on Foster, while Marreese Speights will be the first line of defense against A.J. Ogilvy. A win for Florida gets the Gators to a surprising 5-1 record in the SEC after beating South Carolina on Wednesday in Columbia."

Dores back in the Power 16

Asked and answered, the Commodores have heart. After a humbling at the hands of Tennessee, Vandy smoked LSU and Shan Foster rediscovered how to shoot. The caveat to that win was that it was against a reeling LSU team. If the Commodores can keep things in order against Florida and Ole Miss, the loss to Tennessee will look more and more like a blip and less like an omen.

Billy Gillespie on the Dores'

For the whole conference, click here:

What are your impressions of Vanderbilt?

"They're really good. They're real fun to watch. They really understand their roles. They have very good players. They're getting really good point guard play. They're very talented and deep. They play well on both ends of the court. The thing that's really impressive to me is that they play for 40 minutes every time, and that's the way it should be. That's why they're undefeated. They have so many strengths. They hustle hard on defense and on the glass. They don't let the last play affect the next one. It's a very fun team to watch play."

ESPN Power 16

The Dores move up a spot to #13 in ESPN's Power 16:

Much like their orange-hued Volunteer State brethren, the Commodores just keep finding ways to hold opponents off down the stretch (despite a statistically porous defense). You won't find too many better inside-outside combos, though, than A.J. Ogilvy and Shan Foster. Foster should end up as the SEC Player of the Year.

We're going to help him in every way we can."

Post-Game Comments

While not the prettiest game in the world, I'll take any SEC win I can get. If there is anything that the Truth's worst shooting/scoring performance of the season taught us it's that the team is not just Shan Foster - we find ways to win. Ogilvy proved once again he can be the go-to player to get a bucket or get to the line. For the second game in a row Beale contributes on the offensive and Red chips in with 13 to round out 4 Dores in double-figures. While we aren't putting some opponents away like we should be, we're getting to the line and making our free throws down the stretch (15-17).

Lastly, there are now 5 undefeated teams in NCAA Div-1 basketball and Vanderbilt has the most wins in the country. The other four are ranked 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the polls...

Big game on Saturday (1:30 EST on CBS).

OM's Andy Kennedy Picks 2 Dores on Fab 5 Team

Kennedy picks his SEC fab five
Dan WoikeStaff Analyst

From OM Insiders:

"The rules are simple. Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy got to pick five. Position wasn't a factor. Coach-ability didn't matter. This is about ball. This is about skill...He picked players based strictly on what he wants and what he likes. Not surprisingly, three of the guys can shoot the ball at a high rate. The only rule — Kennedy couldn't pick any of his players"

2 of the Kennedy's favorite were Commodores. Here's what he had to say:

"G Shan Foster, Vanderbilt 6-foot-6 senior. AK on Shan: If the season ended today, he'd be the most valuable player in the league. He's really taken his game to another level. I think he's going to play at the next level with his ability to shoot the ball...

Favorite Freshman
C A.J. Ogilvy, Vanderbilt 6-foot-10 freshman. AK on A.J.: He's unbelievable. The Andrew Bogut-comparisons were inevitable because they're both big Australian centers. But, I think A.J.'s better at this phase in his career. He could be a one-and-out guy."

Foster, Ogilvy Receive SEC Weekly Honors

Shan Foster earns SEC player of the week honors and Ogilvy is awarded SEC freshman of the week.

Gary Parish comments on Shan Foster:

Player who deserves improper benefits: It's a tad early to know whether Vanderbilt is a possible Final Four team because it still hasn't played a ranked opponent. But if the Commodores prove legitimate -- and we should know after that Jan. 17 game at Tennessee -- then Shan Foster is going to be a serious candidate for National Player of the Year honors because he's been nothing short of spectacular this season, the latest example being Saturday's 32-point effort that led Vandy to a 97-88 win over UMass. A senior wing, Foster hit 8-of-12 3-point attempts in the victory and is now making 53.3 percent of his shots from behind the arc. He's scored at least 15 points in all 15 games and UMass coach Travis Ford called him "the best player I've seen this year."

Weekend Watch

Massachusetts at Vanderbilt, Saturday, ESPN Full Court, 4 p.m. ET
Vandy head coach Kevin Stallings has one of the most lethal combinations in college basketball in senior swing man Shan Foster and freshmen insider A.J. Ogilvy. Foster has great bounce and is a lights out 3-point shooter, and Ogilvy is mobile and provides the Commodores with a go-to post presence. UMass has a talented swing man of their own in 6-7 forward Gary Forbes, who can knock down the 3 or post inside. Guards Ricky Harris and Chris Lowe and forward Etienne Brower join Forbes as double-digit scorers. A win for the Minutemen would give them three quality road wins after already beating Syracuse and Boston College. If Vanderbilt can have success against UMass -- which will challenge for the Atlantic 10 title -- the Dores will have a win against a team that will help their postseason résumé as they head into SEC play.
